WHAT IF IT WERE YOUR CHILD?
It’s surprising how delicate a democracy is and how easily one can be dismantled before the masses realize it’s happened. (i.e. Germany in the 30's and 40's) Imagine you live in a country in the control of a corrupt sociopath who pillages the country's wealth and reigns down wrath on all who oppose him. He's dismantled all our institutions and the government is now controlled by a handful of kleptocrat billionaires. The press has been so discredited that no one believes them. The justice system is owned by those who put them in power. And while we were sleeping, what was once an elected leader, morphed from kleptocrat to dictator and the U.S. is now a scary and dangerous place.
The wing-nuts who stockpiled assault rifles have formed gangs, divided up territories, and gunfire rings out 24/7. The same gang leader, who killed your husband, has conscripted your young nephew into his gang and has taken your 14-year-old niece as another “piece” in his stable. You’re terrified for your own kids. Leaving everything and everyone, with much hardship and danger, you head to Canada seeking asylum. You finally arrive, thinking you’re safe. Immediately your children are yanked from your arms and put in little more than cages.
You’re kept in detention and haven’t seen your kids for 9 months. Your son is half the country away (you think) and they’ve lost your daughter, your blonde, blue-eyed daughter. You’re devastated, distraught, wishing you could die except you can’t because you know you have to spend the rest of your life trying to find your precious children.
And I'm wondering about the parents of this metaphorical blonde child. Do you think a brown mother escaping a similar situation loves her brown-skinned, brown-eyed daughter any less than she loves her blonde one? That this brown mother isn’t terrified not knowing what’s happened to her kids? That her heart doesn’t shatter just as yours would if this happened to you? Thousands of asylum-seeking children remain separated from their parents in our harsh and immoral immigration system. Last year, the U.S. completely lost 1475 of them. So I ask you, what if it was YOUR child? That's why we fight. Progressives unite; push forward.
